The Commemoration Program

The Métis Veterans Legacy Program (MVLP)

The MVLP has two objectives:

  1. To acknowledge, through an individual Recognition Payment, the pre- and post-war experiences of Second World War (WWII) Métis Veterans which may have which may have negatively impacted their demobilization success; and
  2. To deliver continued support through the Commemoration Program to our Métis Veterans, for their sacrifices and contributions, by promoting awareness and appreciation across the Métis Nation and all of Canada

About the Program

The sacrifices and contributions Second World War Métis Veterans made to ensure peace and prosperity for all remain largely unknown throughout Canada. The Commemoration Program intends to honour, respect, and preserve their legacy by supporting and fostering awareness initiatives focused on Second World War Métis Veterans amongst the Métis Nation and the Canadian public.

Initiatives approved for funding must associate to one of the four pillars which have been established as primary stakeholders of the overall program:

  1. Métis Veterans & Citizens
  2. Recognized Métis Nation Governments, Organizations, & Institutes
  3. The National Métis Veterans Association
  4. Other Recognized Organizations & Institutes

Eligible Recipients

Those eligible to apply for funding include:

  • Métis Nation Citizens
  • Recognized Métis Nation Government, organizations, and institutes
  • The National Metis Veterans Association
  • Other Recognized Organizations & Institutes

NOTE: Canadian citizens, and Canadian organizations and institutes are required to partner with a Métis Nation citizen or a recognized Métis Nation organization or institute, and must be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve the mandate of the program

Eligible Projects

Examples of eligible projects include:

  • Remembrance Day initiatives
  • National Aboriginal Veterans Day initiatives
  • Memorials and monuments
  • Commemorative ceremonies and events
  • Métis Veteran research papers, art installations, scholarships, books, and any other initiatives of similar sort

How to Apply

The MVLP is inviting those interested to complete a Letter of Intent (LOI) to apply for funding from the Commemoration Program. The LOI is the first step in the application process.

Once the LOI has been assessed, the applicant will be notified and be asked to submit their proposal following the terms and conditions as set out by the MVLP.

Each submission is carefully researched then reviewed by the MVLP Commission which makes the final decision.

Once a project has been approved, a contribution agreement will be established between the applicant and the MVLP outlining the terms and conditions.

It is recommended that you submit your proposal in a timeframe that allows for the processing and notification of funding. Expenses incurred before the project is approved will be subject to approval by the MVLP on a case-by-case basis. Only a complete LOI will be assessed for funding consideration. Project Officers will assist applicants throughout the application process as needed.

There is no deadline for submissions.  All LOIs are accepted on an ongoing basis throughout the year.  Your LOI will be active and considered for approval for a period of up to three years.

Eligible Expenditures

Eligibility of expenditures will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and further confirmed once the LOI has been reviewed, approved, and a request for proposal has been issued.


The MVLP may in part or entirely approve funding for a project under one of the four pillars. Decisions are based on the number and quality of applications received and available funding. Funding is granted based on the type of activity, timeline to complete the project, the identification of risks, and value for dollar.

Funding for any given project, including multi-year programs, will be up to a maximum of $100,000 per project, to a maximum total of $200,000 for multi-year projects. Recipients must adhere to these guidelines and the conditions set out in the contribution agreement. 

Final Report

A final report must be submitted at the conclusion of the project, including a complete financial accounting of the project and evaluation. The report will enable the MVLP to fulfill the obligation of accountability back to primary stakeholders and measure the results and accomplishments of the project.
